30x30: Opportunities for Global Action on Nature & Climate

A high-level event at UNFCCC COP26 with representatives from the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People to discuss the importance of a global agreement to protect and conserve at least 30% of the planet's land and ocean for both adaptation and mitigation of climate change as well as curbing biodiversity loss.

Co-hosts:

The governments of Costa Rica, France and the United Kingdom

Date and time: UNFCCC COP26, 6 of November at 12:30 pm

Background

The governments of Costa Rica and France as co-chairs and the United Kingdom as ocean co-chair of the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People are co-hosting the side event ‘30x30: Opportunities for Global Action on Nature & Climate’ to share information about the global climate and conservation proposal and discuss integrated policy and action for climate and nature, as well as to share views and inquiries.

Topic

In order to address both the biodiversity crisis and the climate crisis, there is growing scientific research that a scientifically credible and necessary interim goal is to achieve a minimum of 30% protection by 2030.

The high-level side event will address the latest science identifying natural ecosystems that store high levels of carbon, are susceptible to emission due to human activities and are high priority for conservation and restoration on land and in the oceans.

This event also provides a crucial opportunity to highlight the synergies between biodiversity and climate, especially demonstrating how protection of biodiversity and the 30x30 target can contribute to both adaptation and mitigation of climate change. It will also be an opportunity to highlight national actions focusing on the lessons learned from integrated approaches on nature and climate and opportunities of linking national strategies and plans such as the Nationally Determined Contributions and the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans.

The panelists will also address global action, including reflections on the opportunities for driving an integrated approach to achieving global goals for nature and climate. With both CBD COP15 and UNFCCC COP26 there is an urgent need and numerous opportunities for synergies in the adoption of a new Global Biodiversity Framework, updated national climate commitments and mapping, as well as important decisions on the role of indigenous peoples and local communities and financing approaches for both nature and climate.
