NEWS: 30x30 High Ambition Coalition Ready to Deliver

Countries secure 30x30 target in the Global Biodiversity Framework and commit to implementation

The main objective of the HAC for Nature and People was the approval of the protection and conservation of at least 30% of the planet’s land and 30% of the planet’s ocean by 2030 . This was successfully adopted at COP15 as part of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Now the HAC for Nature and People is focusing on providing support to HAC members to achieve the 30x30 goal. For this, we are working on a new website that will host different information and implementation tools. You can find more details on this new phase of the HAC below.

Our future depends on preventing the collapse of the natural systems that provide our food, clean water, clean air and stable climate. In order to preserve these services, we must protect enough of the natural world to sustain them.

The HAC for Nature and People is raising our global ambition to achieve at least 30% protection of the land and ocean and ignite transformative change for the future of all life on Earth.

Restoring nature is possible, achievable and necessary! But it will take a global effort from all nations.

There must be:

  • increased spatial targets to protect or effectively conserve at least 30% of the planet - land and sea - by 2030,

  • effective management of protected and conserved areas,

  • increased public and private financing to ensure long-term management and local governance, and

  • clear implementation mechanisms to put nature on a path to recovery by 2030. (Read HAC Concept Note)

Building Momentum Toward a Global Deal and Beyond

As the HAC for Nature and People gathers momentum and grows it will work to push for the ratification of an ambitious, science-driven global deal to safeguard nature and humanity’s future at the upcoming 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. Moreover the coalition seeks to find synergies amongst the Rio Conventions and work on increasing the ambition beyond the 15th meeting of the CBD.

Ambitious Leadership Based on the Foremost Scientific Research

The need for a global deal for protecting at least 30% of the planet is based on leading scientific research and the best available evidence.
